Chippa United chairman reveals new way of handling coaches

Chippa United chairman Siviwe Mpengesi has revealed his new approach to dealing with coaches, insisting that Morgan Mammila is safe even if the mentor loses the opening 10 matches.

Mpengesi is known as a trigger-happy boss who does not hesitate to pull the trigger when results are not forthcoming.

He has this season tasked Mammila to guide the club despite him being one of the coaches who were fired last season. Mammila started the season DStv Premiership season with three draws against Kaizer Chiefs, TS Galaxy and Orlando Pirates.

CHIPPA UNITED’S NEW APPROACH

Chippa Mpengesi told Newzroom Africa of his new approach, which includes the first 10 matches of the plan.

“We have realised that sometimes firing coaches within the 10-game bracket doesn’t help you,” he said.

“You have to bring another one, and then you start all over again. As you know, in Gqeberha we don’t have the Privilege of these friendly games because we are the only team. So we have realised that these first games are really giving us a pre-season preparation.

“Hence, this season, we have taken a stance to say our league will start after the 10th game. So this means we can lose all the first 10 games, and he [Morgan Mammila] will not be fired. If he wins some or draws some, it will even be better because it shows that we can end up competing in the top eight,” explained Mpengesi.

MORGAN MAMMILA UNDERSTANDS MPENGESI’S PHILOSOPHY

“He [Morgan Mammila] is very much safe. He has also learnt, as you know, that he went to Moroka Swallows, which was also fighting relegation, but he assisted them to finish in the top eight.

“So I have approved of him; he is a man who understands my philosophy, and he is a man that I believe that [he will succeed]. I mean, you have seen the way he started.

“This season, we said our League officially starts in the 10th game. So we can not judge him now until the 10th game. We are pleased with how he started so far,” he said.

Chippa United will host Mamelodi Sundowns in a DStv Premiership clash at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday at 20:00.
