Former Pirates star opens up on Magesi move

Former Orlando Pirates star Diamond Thopola has opened up on his transfer to Motsepe Foundation Championship side Magesi FC ahead of the upcoming season.

The defender was officially unveiled by Dikwena tša Meetse on Friday, 18 August at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Thopola has been training with the club since last month as first reported by FARPost

He joins the Limpopo outfit after he cut ties with the now-defunct All Stars, who sold their status to Black Leopards.

WHY DIAMOND THOPOLA CHOSE MAGESI FC

In an interview after his unveiling, the highly experienced player revealed why he chose to join Magesi.

“Last season was with All Stars. As we all know, they sold their status to Black Leopards. So, that’s when coach Clinton Larsen gave me a call to come join him this side,” said Thopola.

“As you heard from the press conference, they are building a new project which I was very excited to be part of it. So, that’s why I’m here at Magesi.”

WHAT THOPOLA THINKS OF MAGESI PROJECT

The defender went on reveal what he thinks of his new side’s project, as the new term looms large.

“To be honest with you , NFD is a very tough league because everyone is talking the same language,” he added.

“It’s not like in the DStv Premiership where sometimes just want to be in the top eight.

“So, in the NFD there’s no top eight and whatever. Everyone wants to win the league. I think at the end of the season whoever wants it the most will have a good chance to get promoted.”

THOPOLA STILL HAS ASPIRATIONS TO PLAY IN THE TOP FLIGHT

Thopola further stated that he still has a desire to play in the DStv Premiership, but what matters the most for him now is to lead Magesi to the promised land.

“Everyone wants to be there [play in the DStv Premiership], but for me to be here at Magesi is to guide the younger ones and share my experiences with them,” Thopola explained.

“I will be happy to see most of them play in the PSL maybe in the next season or in the near future.”

Magesi will commence the new season against arch-rivals Baroka FC at the Global Stadium.

The Limpopo derby will take on Sunday, 27 August 2023, with the kick-off set for 15:00.
