Shaun Bartlett reflects on disappointing start of the season
Cape Town Spurs coach Shaun Bartlett has demanded a reaction from his players following a disappointing start to their DStv Premiership return. Spurs were beaten 3-1 by Polokwane City at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. It was their third defeat since gaining promotion through the PSL promotion playoffs.
Prior to the match, they had lost the opening match 1-0 to TS Galaxy and a 2-0 loss to Sekhukhune United.
SHAUN BARTLET DEMANDS A REACTION FROM HIS PLAYERS
Speaking after the clash in Polokwane, Bartlett said the loss was a wake-up call for the club and players.
“We have to find a reaction next Friday at home against Chippa. Obviously not the ideal way we would have wanted to start the DStv Premiership,” he said.
WAKE-UP CALL FOR NEWLY PROMOTED CAPE TOWN SPURS
“But I think it’s also a wake-up call for our boys. In order to compete at a higher level you have to also increase your capacity. So we have to learn from this, again a couple of individual errors from us.
“So we have to work harder in order to come back, we have to go to the training ground. The scoreline is not a true reflection of the game, they had a lot fewer chances on goal but our attempts didn’t find the target so that’s the biggest difference,” he added.
The Urban Warriors are the only team yet to collect a point after three rounds of matches. They have scored just once and conceded six in the process.
“Everybody needs to do their part, in order for the goal to be conceded it starts from the front. If we are not defending from the front then it goes to the middle and at the back.”
Their next league match for Shaun Bartlett and his players will be on Friday, 25 August against Chippa United.
