Former Pirates anchorman off the mark in France
A former Orlando Pirates anchorman got his first goal of the 2023/24 French Ligue 1 season when Stade Reims beat Clermont on Sunday.
Zimbabwean International Marshall Munetsi, who is in his fourth year of Stade Reims’ books, is undoubtedly a vital cog for the team.
Against Clermont Foot, he was deployed in a more offensive role, and he proved to be versatile when he thrust them into the lead.
The 27-year-old put Stade Reims in control of the match after 17 minutes, darting the ball home from close range.
Mohamed Daramy grabbed Stade Reims’ second goal six minutes before full time, and they held on to seal a home win.
WHAT THE FORMER PIRATES STAR SAID AFTER SCORING
Overall, the former Orlando Pirates anchorman put in a good shift for Stade Reims.
That was their first win of the season after the 2-1 defeat to Marseille in the season-opening match.
The former Orlando Pirates anchorman is on cloud nine after the goal. He took to Facebook to share his excitement.
“Great team performance, Stade de Reims, to get our first win of the season at home. We keep going #GodIsGreat,” reads the post.
Munetsi recently extended his contract with the club, keeping him there until the end of the 2026/27 season.
The steady and gritty midfielder was signed from Orlando Pirates in 2019, where he did not enjoy much success.
Last season, Munetsi was the second player to cover the most distance on the pitch, recording 13.7km in one match.
And the French club pledged to donate R 1900 to his foundation in Zimbabwe. The money will be donated for every kilometre he runs for the duration of his contract.
Munetsi was also nominated for the 2023 Marc-Vivien Foé Award. This is a prestigious accolade which rewards the best African player in the French Ligue 1.
In addition, he was appointed to the FIFPRO Global Player Council, a platform for active players to lobby their concerns.
