Banyana legend Janine van Wyk re-joins her club after spell abroad

Banyana Banyana veteran defender Janine van Wyk has returned home after a short stint with Greece women’s football club Ergotoris. 

The 36-year-old footballer joined the European side in September 2022 after helping Banyana win the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations [WAFCON] tile held in Morocco. 

Van Wyk returns home to her own club JVW FC for the second time, having returned to South Africa in January 2020 after her contract with Fortuna Hjorring was terminated following her serious knee injury. 

JVW OFFICIAL STATEMENT 

“After competing in Greece for the 2022 season, Janine Van Wyk returns to her home roots,” read the statement. 

“She joins the showroom of Blue Diamonds, bringing her wealth of knowledge and experience to the team.

So far, JVW are placed in fifth position in the Hollywoodbets Super League with 37 points after 18 outings.

JVW’S NEXT ASSIGNMENT

Now, the side will look to turn the tables around after a great FIFA Women’s World Cup break.

JVW will take on Ma-Indies at Giyani Stadium on Saturday, 26 August 2023. The game will start at 15:00.

Van Wyk will be expected to add the much-needed experience to JVW’s defence and guide them to the promised land. 

The highly experienced defender also had stints with teams such as Houston Dash in the United States of America and Scottish side Glasgow City. 

Van Wyk remains the only South African most-capped player at the national level with 180 appearances. 

She made her Banyana debut against Nigeria in the African Women’s Championship back in 2005. She went on to score the only goal of the day

Van Wyk’s goal against the Super Falcons saw South Africa seal their first-ever win over Nigeria since the formation of the women’s national in 1993.
