Former Bafana goalkeeper’s presence at Baroka explained
Baroka FC Boss Khurishi Mphahlele has explained the presence of a former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper.
Ex-Bafana goalie, Shu-Aib Walters, initially told FARPost in July that he was at the club for just one month to help the goalkeeping department.
But the 41-year-old is still with the Motsepe Foundation Championship side. Although he is officially not part of the technical team on the bench, he is still working with the goalkeepers at the club.
Baroka kicked off their 2023/24 season with a 2-1 loss to Magesi FC on Sunday.
SHU-AIB WALTER PRESENCE AT BAROKA FC EXPLAINED
“He is a businessman who has businesses in Johannesburg. So we asked him to come and help us on a part-time basis,” explained Mphahlele.
“As and when we request him to come, we will discuss that. He has been here for the past two months, and I asked him to be here for the first game so that he can see how the goalkeepers are doing. We brought him here specifically for goalkeepers,” he said.
BOALEFA PULE ON WORKING WITH EX-BAFANA BAFANA KEEPER
Meanwhile, newly signed goalkeeper Boalefa Pule has also revealed how Walters played a role in him joining Baroka. Pule was in goals during Baroka’s first match of the season on Sunday.
“My decision to come to Baroka was also influenced by Shu-Aib Walters, a legend of the goalkeeping department in South Africa,” he said.
“Working closely with him will benefit my game, and I think I am at the age where also goalkeepers pick. So when I spoke to coach Shu-Aib, we shared our thoughts about my decision to come here, so they played a big role in making my decision,” said the former SuperSport United goal-stopper.
Baroka will return to league action when they travel to Platinum City Rovers on Saturday, 1 September.
