Former striker picks out Chiefs’ best midfield signing in recent years

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Kelvin Mushangazhike has named one of the new Amakhosi signings as the club’s best midfield acquisition in the last couple of years.

The Soweto giants have been one of the busiest teams on the transfer market, reinforcing their squad to challenge for honours under new coach Molefi Ntseki.

They added defenders Given Msimango and Thatayaone Dilthokwe, as well as midfielders Edson Castillo and Mduduzi Mdantsane. Tebogo Potsane, Pule Mmodi and striker Ranga Chivaviro also joined the Naturena-based club.

Chiefs recently welcomed Colombian striker Efmamjjasond González Palacios, who arrived in the country on Wednesday last week.

Most of the new Kaizer Chiefs signings have been thrown into the fray except for the 24-year-old Colombian.

How Efmamjjasond González Palacios will far at Chiefs remains to be seen as the season slowly reaches a crescendo.

But the retired striker, Kelvin Mushangazhike, is convinced Chiefs struck gold by signing the steady Castillo.

“I think he is the best midfield signing in years. How he quickly adapted tells a lot about his character and quality,” Mushangazhike told FARPost.

“Of course, there is still a long way to go, but from what I have seen so far, seems he is destined to be their best signing in recent times.”

Despite not being able to communicate directly with his teammates, the Venezuelan has been exceptional in his job.

Castillo does not speak English and has had to rely on Edmilson Dove to translate all instructions into Spanish.

In fact, it is the Mozambiquan defender, Dove, who has been helping him adapt to life in Naturena.

Castillo was on target on Saturday when Kaizer Chiefs beat troubled AmaZulu 3-0 in a DStv Premiership match.

That was his second goal for the Molefi Ntseki-coached side, having scored in the MTN8 quarter-finals against Cape Town City.

Pule Mmodi scored the other two goals for Amakhosi in a win that eased pressure on the newly christianed coach, Ntseki.
