‘It’s perfect to have Itumeleng Khune there’
Kaizer Chiefs legend William Shongwe has explained why having veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune around the squad is perfect.
Khune, who turned 36 in June, has been at Chiefs for his entire professional career, making his debut in 2004. He has won three league titles, three Nedbank Cups, and the MTN8 with the club.
Ahead of the 2023/24 PSL Premiership season, Chiefs handed him a one-year deal which expires in June 2024.
The club indicated the possibility of having him transition to the next phase of his career at the expiry of that contract.
Khune has struggled with injuries in recent years and has lost his place as first-choice goalkeeper to Brandon Petersen.
He has sat on the substitute’s bench once this season, as coach Molefi Ntseki prefers Petersen.
Despite this, Shongwe believes that Khune still has much to offer the Kaizer Chiefs squad.
“It’s perfect to have Itumeleng Khune around the Chiefs squad,” Shongwe told FARPost.
KHUNE STILL HAS A LOT TO OFFER, SAYS SHONGWE
“He is a club legend and still has much experience to offer. It’s very important, and it’s clear that Khune has served well.
“I still feel maybe he still has one or two seasons in his body. But if you have a younger goalkeeper who can do the business, it’s nice to have Khune there to keep the morale. I think it’s perfect for that transition.”
He believes Khune can help to mentor the younger goalkeepers. Besides 28-year-old Petersen, Chiefs also have Bruce Bvuma, 28, and 20-year-old Bontle Molefe.
Shongwe also believes that Khune’s presence in the squad can help to boost morale. The 2012/13 Footballer of the Season is arguably the most successful South African goalkeeper in recent years.
Khune is expected to play a backup role to Petersen this season, but he could still be called upon to play in significant matches. His experience and leadership could be invaluable to the Chiefs squad as they look to challenge for trophies in 2023/24.
