Where Kaizer Chiefs could get more from Edson Castillo

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Edson Castillo has made an impressive start to his career at the club, but there is still more that he can offer.

Castillo, who joined Chiefs from Venezuelan outfit Monagas SC, has impressed with his passing, ability to break down opposition attacks and vision. He has also scored two goals in his five appearances for the club.

His first goal for the club would have endeared him to the club’s faithful as it secured them a place in the semi-final of the MTN8.

The Venezuelan then got his second against AmaZulu FC in an emphatic 3-0 win at home on Saturday.
Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper William Shongwe picked an element of his game that could benefit Amakhosi.

“I’m very impressed by Castillo as well. This is my impression of him. They normally play with [Yusuf] Maart as the two 6s,” Shongwe told FARPost.

CHIEFS LEGEND ON CASTILLO

The Chiefs legend noticed a tweak coach Molefi Ntseki did with the 29-year-old midfielder during the City tie.

“In the Cape Town City game [MTN8], they were able to convert him, playing a little bit advanced alongside [Mduduzi] Mdantsane.

“They left Maart to handle the defensive side of it. It takes brains. It takes football intelligence to know when to go and when to attack the box.

“That’s what I saw about him. Not only can he break down the opposition’s attack, but he can initiate moves.

“Eventually, he finished that one from a midfield position….he had transformed into a more attacking role.

“I said it five minutes before he scored that Maart had stayed to be the one number six, and Castillo pushed forward to assist the offensive part of the team.

“Little did I know he’d go as far as getting the goal. That, for me, is an excellent ability by a player.

“So you can see that the more he settles, he’s gonna make a very big impact.”

Shongwe seems to suggest a freer Castillo, playing box-to-box, could give more to Amakhosi.

Castillo will be hoping to continue his good form when Chiefs take on Stellenbosch FC in the DStv Premiership on Wednesday away in Cape Town.

Castillo will be key to Chiefs’ chances of victory. If he can play to his potential, he could be the difference between the two teams.
