Broos’ no-holds-barred assessment of Chiefs players
Outspoken Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has given his no-holds-barred assessment of the Kaizer Chiefs players, with none of them making the cut in his latest squad.
Broos named his final 23-man squad on Wednesday at the SABC Studios in Johannesburg that will take on Namibia and DR Congo in international friendly matches in September.
Bafana will tackle Namibia on Saturday, September 9 at 15:00. Three days later, they will take on DR Congo on Tuesday, September 12 at 17:00. Both matches will be held at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto.
Four Amakhosi players, Brandon Petersen, Given Msimango, Pule Mmodi and Sifiso Hlanti, were named in the preliminary squad. However, they were all excluded from the final squad.
According to the Belgian tactician, in the current Chiefs squad, no player deserves to wear the Bafana jersey. It is no surprise that Broos’ team is made up of mostly players from Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, as these are the two in-form teams.
Broos says Chiefs players not good enough for BAFANA
“Chiefs has to improve,” said Broos. Last Saturday, [at FNB Stadium], I was at the game of Chiefs [against AmaZulu FC]. I’m very sorry. But now, at the moment, there is no player who deserves to be in Bafana Bafana,” said Broos.
“For the moment, Kaizer Chiefs is still Kaizer Chiefs of last year. They have a lot of new players, maybe that’s the reason why they don’t achieve the level they need to achieve.
“When you make a decision, you try to have a best team. That’s what I do,” added the Bafana coach.
Broos further stated that the Chiefs’ poor start to the new season could have been a factor in the club’s players being overlooked.
The Soweto giants are enduring an eight-year trophy drought, and they have signed new players in an attempt to bring back the glory days with Molefi Ntseki at the helm. In the 2023/24 season, they have only won one of the four league games.
Chiefs are 11 points behind Mamelodi Sundowns in the early stages of the DStv Premiership title race.
“They are many points behind Sundowns. And I said it last year: for any competition, it’s important that the top teams are at the top of the ranking,” said Broos.
“[Orlando] Pirates won yesterday [against Cape Town City]. I think there is a five points difference between Sundowns. With Kaizer Chiefs, I think it’s too much. Only five games, and you’re already 11 points behind whose first, and it’s not a little team.”
