Pule Mmodi’s stunner sees Chiefs beat Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium
Kaizer Chiefs attacker Pule Mmodi showed his class once again as the Soweto giants defeated Stellenbosch FC 2-0 in a Dstv Premiership clash on Wednesday at Athlone Stadium.
Mmodi opened the scoring in the 52nd minute before substitute Christian Saile doubled the lead in the 89th minute as Amakhosi registered their second win on the bounce in the league.
Mmodi is slowly regaining his form, as he has now scored three goals in back-to-back encounters.
The victory saw Molefi Ntseki’s team climb to fifth place on the log standings with seven points from five matches. On the other hand, Stellenbosch have now suffered back-to-back losses after losing to SuperSport United last time out.
Both teams didn’t make drastic changes in their starting line-ups. The hosts made two, Sage Stephens and Andre De Jong replaced Oscarine Masuluke and Qobolwakhe Sibande, respectively. For the visitors, Reeve Frosler came in for Sifiso Hlanti.
GOALLESS AT THE BREAK
The team from Cape Windlands were far much a better side in the first half. They created many chances and dominated play in Amakhosi’s final third but couldn’t break the deadlock.
Their first chance to score fell to Iqraam Rayners in the 13th minute, whose shot from close range was off-target. A minute later, Andre de Jong saw his effort not troubling Chiefs keeper Brandon Petersen.
The Soweto giants’ first goal-scoring chance came 21 minutes into the game. Stephens was forced a saved after the ball came off Given Msimango.
Just after the hour mark, Stellies started asking questions as they were searching for a goal. Petersen was kept busy. First, Devin Titus almost broke the deadlock with a great strike. Moments later, De Jong also came close to making it 1-0.
PULE MMODI GIVES KAIZER CHIEFS A LEAD
In the second half, the Glamour Boys came back a changed side. They were eventually rewarded in the 52nd minute after Mmodi scored a stunner.
In the 55th minute, it got worse for the Capetonians as Titus was given his marching orders after picking up a second yellow card for a foul.
Two minutes later, it was almost 2-0 but Frosler couldn’t direct his attempt firing it high and wide. Towards the stoppage time, substitute Christian Saile made it 2-0 to ensure that three points were in the bag.
