The secret behind Sundowns’ longest unbeaten run in PSL era

Mamelodi Sundowns mentor Rulani Mokwena has revealed the secret behind the club’s longest unbeaten run in the PSL era.

Bafana Ba Style are unbeaten in 30 games in the DStv Premiership, which is a record for the club. In those 30 matches, Masandawana has won 24 games and drew six since September 2022.

Kaizer Chiefs holds the record for the longest unbeaten run in the PSL history with 31 games, having won 15 matches and drew 16 in the process. This was between January and November in the year 2005.

Mokwena has since put the Brazilians’ unbeaten run down to the club’s collective efforts.

The 36-year-old coach went on to reveal that his side’s excellent form is not a surprise to him. He insists that a lot of hard work is done behind the scenes.

“Lots of praise must go to the entire club. I think when you see, what you see is not just the work of the technical team only,” he said.

“It starts from the senior management and the chairman of the football club for the investment, motivation and the support that they give to us.

“You know, we have got a lot of hard workers in the institution. These people work very hard. It all goes down to collective efforts.”

Mokwena continued: “This includes the grounds stuff that helps us with the training fields, the kit managers, and the kitchen stuff.

“The 12 months [unbeaten run] you speak about it’s a reflection of the hard work of the entire organisation from top to bottom.”

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS’ NEXT ASSIGNMENT

Interestingly, Sundowns will be facing Chiefs in the MTN8 semi-final first leg on Saturday, 2 September at FNB Stadium. The kick-off will start at 15:00.

Chiefs have struggled to beat Sundowns in their last three league meetings. But, this time around, Amakhosi will be hoping to prove a point and walk away with the bragging rights.
