Molefi Ntseki explains Zitha Kwinika’s selection ahead of Reeve Frosler

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Molefi Ntseki has explained his decision to start Zitha Kwinika ahead of Reeve Frosler at right-back during the MTN8 semi-final first leg against Mamelodi Sundowns.

The two sides played to a 1-1 draw in front of a nearly full-capacity crowd at FNB stadium on Saturday. The hosts, Amakhosi broke the deadlocks early in the second half courtesy of Edson Castillo.

However, they conceded in injury time with Khuliso Mudau scoring a header to equalise for the Tshwane giants.

Meanwhile, many Chiefs fans were caught by surprise seeing Kwinika starting ahead of Frosler, recalling the latter’s fine performance against the same opponents last month in a league clash.

Last week, Frosler missed a match against AmaZulu FC due to illness. However, he returned in the previous game on Wednesday when they defeated Stellenbosch FC, playing as a left-back.

Chiefs gaffer says he opted for Kwinika because they didn’t concede when the former Stellies defender featured in the past two games.

“I think since Zitha came in for Reeve at right back, we never concede anything,” said Ntseki.

“The past two games he played and I think you also build confidence in your players. If you had a good game, you build from a good game.

“I think Reeve was out for a reason for a reason, he came back and played very well last week. But the plan was to have Zitha and Hlanti in closing down the attack from Sundowns and also going on attack after regaining possession.

“So, I think Zitha did well and then we brought Reeve to help him because we were aware that Sundowns was overloading the side of Zitha. So, Reeve as a right-back, the plan was to keep our lead and help Zitha.”

Chiefs are next on action against Royal AM in the DStv Premiership on 16 September at FNB Stadium. They will also lock horns with SuperSport United in a league tie on 20 September before they meet Sundowns in the MTN8 semi-final second leg on 23 September.
