Latest update on Themba Zwane’s injury

Mamelodi Sundowns have provided the latest injury update of the club captain Themba Zwane.

The talented winger sustained a deep cut to his upper right eye in their first leg of the MTN8 semi-final clash against Kaizer Chiefs this past Saturday.

Zwane had to be substituted in the 37th minute. He was replaced by Sundowns’ new recruit Lesiba Nku.

Masandawana played out to a 1-1 draw with the Glamour Boys at FNB Stadium. 

Chiefs were the first to find the back of the net through Edson Castillo in the 61st minute. However, Sundowns salvaged a draw when Khuliso Mudau scored an equaliser in the stoppage time.

“In Saturday’s MTN8 semi-final first leg Themba ‘Mshishi’ Zwane sustained a deep cut to his upper right eye,” read the club’s statement. 

“He received immediate medical attention field and was stabilised at the stadium. 

“Zwane was later sent to hospital for further observation and a precautionary scan in terms of concussion protocols.” 

On a positive note, the Brazilians have confirmed that the Bafana Bafana international is recovering well at home. 

“The good news is that he is well and resting at home under the supervision of the club’s medical department,” Sundowns further stated.

THEMBA ZWANE SET TO BE RULED OUT OF BAFANA BAFANA SQUAD 

With the 34-year-old footballer recovering well from the comfort of his home, he is most likely to be ruled out of the Bafana squad set to face Namibia and DR Congo. 

Broos’ charges will welcome Namibia on Saturday, 9 September 2023 at Orlando Stadium. The kick-off will start at 15:00. 

South Africa will then face DR Congo on Tuesday, 12 September at 17h00 at the very same venue. 

The two friendly international matches are part of the preparations for the 2023 AFCON tournament. The competition will take place in Ivory Coast in January next year.
