Hollywoodbets Super League fixtures postponed due to political riots in KZN
The Hollywoodbets Super League has confirmed the postponement of two league fixtures following political riots in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, 10 September 2023.
The match between Royal AM and City Lads was scheduled to kick off at 11:30.
According to SABC Sport, Inkatha Freedom Party [IFP] supporters violently stormed the King Zwelithini Stadium gates and started firing gunshots into the air.
This comes a day after the passing of the IFP founding leader Prince Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi.
It has been reported that the IFP supporters were marching in honour of their leader Buthelezi on the streets of Umlazi.
To add to that, another fixture that has been affected by the ongoing political riots in KwaZulu-Natal is the match between Durban Ladies and TS Galaxy Queens at 15:00 at the very same venue.
As a result, the two matches were forced to be called off for safety reasons at the stadium.
The new dates for both fixtures will be communicated in due course.
HOLLYWOODBETS SUPER LEAGUE STATEMENT
“Live Matches, which were scheduled today in Durban, have been called off. This is due to the safety concerns at the stadium,” read the statement.
“New dates to be communicated soon. Thank you.”
On the 9th of June 2023, a similar incident happened when the ugly scenes erupted at the end of the SAFA ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs match between Umsinga United and Orbit College at Harry Gwala Stadium.
The uncontrollable Umsinga fans stormed onto the pitch posing security concerns for players and gunshots were fired into the air.
This came after Umsinga lost 1-0 to the North West outfit in the semifinals of the playoffs.
As a result, the hosts’ fans couldn’t accept the defeat on their own turf. They subsequently caused chaos after the final whistle blew.
