Nange reflects on Kaizer Chiefs’ struggles after Gavin Hunt’s exit

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Phathutshedzo Nange has opened up on his struggles at the club after Gavin Hunt’s departure.

Nange was a regular under Hunt, helping the club to reach the CAF Champions League final.

He made 26 appearances for Chiefs under Hunt, scoring two goals. He was limited to one start and four substitute appearances the following season.

However, after Hunt was fired in May 2021, Nange struggled to find his form under new coach Arthur Zwane.

Nange has joined SuperSport United to work with Gavin Hunt again and insists the four-time Premiership-winning coach knows how to get the best out of him.

Before the Chiefs stint, the 31-year-old worked with Hunt at Bidvest Wits in the 2019/20 season.
Nange, who was released by AmaKhosi at the end of last season, said he never hesitated when Hunt called for him.

NANGE ON WORKING WITH HUNT

“I enjoy working with Hunt all the time as he believes in me,” Nange told FARPost.

“I had a good time with him at Wits and Chiefs as I played regularly. But when he left Chiefs, things did not go the way I planned, especially last season after I played one league game and the Black Label Cup.

“I am happy to join SuperSport and to work with Hunt again. I am also positive that I will enjoy playing football again.”

Nange further revealed that he is now fit to play 90 minutes when the league resumes after the FIFA break.

“My fitness was not to standard when I joined United because of lack of game time last season. I had to work hard during the pre-season,” he said.

“I feel ready to help SuperSport United do well domestically and internationally. And I can’t wait for our next match.”

Nange also mentioned that he believes the three-time PSL champions will be in the mix to challenge for the title this season.

“We have a coach who is a winner,” he said. “We also have a team of young and experienced players capable of challenging for any trophy.”

The last time United won the championship was under Hunt, lifting it thrice in 2007/08, 2008/09 and 2009/10 season.

Hunt’s lads are third on the log with 10 points from five matches. They are eight points behind Mamelodi Sundowns but with a game in hand over their Tshwane rivals.
