Ex-coach reveals why Patrick Maswanganyi is flourishing at Pirates
Patrick Maswanganyi’s ex-coach Farouk Khan has revealed why he believes the talented attacker is flourishing at Orlando Pirates.
The duo worked together at Stars of Africa Academy when Maswanganyi was a teenager.
Maswanganyi has hit the ground running at the Soweto giants since joining them from SuperSport United. During Bucs’ pre-season tour in Spain, he showed some signs that he would do well for his new club; scoring three goals.
Since the beginning of the 2023/24 PSL campaign, the 25-year-old has been one of the key players for the Sea Robbers. The skilled attacker has cemented his place in the starting 11 becoming a regular.
So far, he has contributed towards five goals from seven matches in all competitions. Maswanganyi has scored two goals and provided three assists.
To add, for these brilliant performances on the pitch, the former Stars of Africa player has won two Man of the Match awards.
KHAN SAYS PIRATES PLAY FOOTBALL WHICH SUITS PATRICK MASWANGANYI
According to Khan, Maswanganyi is having a great impact at Pirates as compared to SuperSport because of the style of play.
“I think the way [Orlando] Pirates play, it suits him. It’s very similar to the way he was brought up in the academy. We play a bit of an attacking game, nothing wrong with SuperSport,” Khan told FARPost.
“I think Pirates style and game model suits him, takes more of the ball. He’s on the ball in most of the build-ups.
“[In a team] There will be bigger guys like [Thembinkosi] Lorch, but since the coaches have realised what he’s capable of, the players now give him more respect. I think now he’s become a very important player in the Orlando Pirates team.”
