Why Broos played Lyle Foster in an unfamiliar position against DR Congo
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has opened up on his decision to play striker Lyle Foster in an unfamiliar position against DR Congo in an international friendly.
The national team stretched their unbeaten streak to nine matches after narrowly edging DR Congo 1-0 on Tuesday at Orlando Stadium.
Foster, who was deployed to a different position operating as a number 10 scored the only goal of the match in the 25th minute.
HUGO BROOS ON PLAYING LYLE FOSTER AS AN ATTACKING MIDFIELDER
The Belgian mentor had to play Foster behind the strikers because he was the only option that they thought can do the job after the injury of Themba Zwane.
Against Namibia last time out, the 1996 AFCON champions failed to find a solution. The team wasn’t creative enough in the final third as the match ended in a 0-0 stalemate at the weekend.
“We were looking for someone in that position, If there was someone in this group maybe Lyle can [play the role],” said Broos.
“You can’t blame him if we didn’t see what we wanted to see, this is not his position. We were just trying that maybe with him, we can have a solution, but it’s not really the solution.
LYLE FOSTER SCORING IS A CONFIDENCE BOOSTER GOING BACK TO BURNLEY
Broos further believes Bafana winning and Foster scoring is a confidence booster for him and his team Burnley FC who sit at the bottom of the Premier League log after three straight defeats.
“But again Lyle was important, That is also something positive with his team Burnley, they have zero points, but he scored two times.
“This is also good for his confidence and good for us, a player that can score, he’s dangerous in the 16 [area] and he showed he can today,” added the Bafana coach.
