Percy Tau opens up on Al Ahly future
Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau has opened up on his future at Egyptian giants Al Ahly following months of speculation.
There has been speculation that he could leave the club, with Saudi Arabia touted as a possible destination.
Tau overcame his injury woes last season to become a key player for Al Ahly. He helped the club win five trophies, including the Egyptian Premier League and CAF Champions League titles.
The former Brighton attacker has since revealed that he has set his sights on more success with the club in the coming season. This comes after his contract with the Cairo giants was extended.
After arriving at Ahly in 2021, he penned an initial three-year deal that would have kept him at the club until 2024.
PERCY TAU CONTRACT UPDATE
“I have a contract with Al Ahly until June 2025,” he told Mozzart Sport. “We won five trophies last year, and we’ll try to do it again this year. I’m happy to be competing for major trophies, Al Ahly is a big club that always tries to win.”
The former Mamelodi Sundowns forward admits last season’s success will not count as they take on new challenges. “It doesn’t matter what you won the previous season. In the new season, you have to do it all again.”
The 29-year-old is, however, upbeat they can still dominate both locally and on the continent. Ahly will also take part in the new African Football League tournament that roars into life in October.
“I’m optimistic for next season, and I hope everything goes to plan,” he said.
On the continental front, they kick off their campaign with a tie against CAF Confederation Cup champions USM Alger in Taif on Friday. The CAF Super Cup clash is set to start at 20:00.
He has just returned to Cairo after featuring in an international friendly against DR Congo on Tuesday. The Ahly star captained Bafana Bafana in the absence of Ronwen Williams, who was ruled out because of illness.
Tau will be hoping to continue from where he left off last season as he looks to play a part in the AFCON finals next January in Ivory Coast.
