Junior Dion’s brace earns AmaZulu win against CT City
AmaZulu FC claimed a 3-2 victory over Cape Town City in the DStv Premiership encounter at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday evening.
Junior Dion’s brace in the dying minutes of the game earned Usuthu the much-needed win at their own turf.
The hosts started the showdown on a front foot making use of their home ground advantage.
Just six minutes into the contest, Mbongeni Gumede broke the deadlock for Usuthu.
As the half wore on, the home side continued to look the more dangerous side.
However, the Citizens did not just sit back and watch their opponents come at them. Eric Tinkler’s side pushed forward in numbers and came agonisingly close to finding an equaliser.
The showpiece began to settle into a slower rhythm, but it was the Cape club who redeemed themselves threatening more.
In the 26th minute, Khanyisa Mayo scored his first goal of the season when he levelled matters.
Despite a good display towards the half-time break, City were unable to add to the scoreline against the resilient KwaZulu-Natal side.
LEVEL AT HALF-TIME BREAK
The match went into the interval with both sides level with a 1-1 scoreline.
In the second stanza, Usuthu worked themselves downfield, piling pressure on the visitors.
City struggled to create any clear chances in the opening minutes of the second period.
AmaZulu were cutting through the City defence and forcing them into errors, as they operated a shoot-on-sight policy at times.
Unfortunately, Usuthu’s joy was short-lived when the Citizens’ troops began to find something of a foothold in the match.
CAPE TOWN CITY TAKES LEAD
Tshegofatso Nyama gave his side a lead when he found the back of the net in the 58th minute of the game.
The KZN side, on the other hand, barely ventured into City’s half as the second half progressed.
In the last minutes of the showdown, Dion did the unthinkable, as he scored a brace to hand AmaZulu a win when everyone thought City will walk away with maximum points.
The final whistle blew with Usuthu claiming three points at home.
With all being said, it was an utterly breathless, wildly unpredictable, and wonderfully intense affair.
