Stellenbosch FC CEO confirms Chiefs’ formal bid for Sibongiseni Mthethwa, but…

Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie has confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs formally submitted a bid for Sibongiseni Mthethwa.

FARPost on Friday reported that Chiefs had tabled an offer for the talismanic midfield grafter. Benadie has since confirmed that Amakhosi have expressed interest in the gritty midfielder.

Mthethwa has been a standout player for Stellies since joining them in January last year from Black Leopards. The 28-year-old’s impressive form last season has put him on the wishlist of Amakhosi, AmaZulu FC and Orlando Pirates

While confirming Chiefs’ formal bid, Benadie made it clear ‘Ox’ was a player they “want to retain”.

“There has been a lot of uninformed speculation around the player in the press lately. Mthethwa is a highly valued SFC player that we want to retain,” the CEO told SABC Sport.

According to the public broadcaster, the ‘uninformed speculation’ Benadie was referring to is rumours that Stellies have set a price tag of R15 million for Mthethwa.

“A few clubs have shown interest, including an offer from Chiefs, but as of today [Saturday], he remains firmly with us.”

The DStv Premiership transfer window in South Africa closes on Friday [September 22], leaving Chiefs with just five days to conclude the deal.

Interestingly, Stellies coach Steve Barker told the media that “sometimes I take them with a pinch of salt because it is always speculation.”

“You know he is a good player, and we all know he has had a good time with us. When you have a good player and the window is still open, there will always be speculation.

“But right now, that is all it is. I’m just glad he is committed to us, and he put in a very good performance once again.”
