‘The ball wasn’t running very smoothly’: Gavin Hunt

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt blamed the condition of the pitch for the role it played in their 1-1 draw with Gaborone United in the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round clash on Saturday evening.

Hunt was left frazzled last night after watching his side concede a late goal, as Gaborone came back from a goal down to salvage a draw at Botswana National Stadium.

SuperSport were the first to score when they took the lead from the restart through Keenan Bezuidenhout.

However, Hunt insisted he was satisfied with a goal away from home in Botswana, even though they should have won the game.

Despite the Matsatsantsa mentor being happy with a goal away, Hunt highlighted the surface of the pitch as a problem for the Tshwane giants.

In a post-match interview, the 59-year-old coach said: “A goal away from home is always important.

“I mean, it was difficult. The ball wasn’t running very smoothly, bobbly and bouncy. So, the football wasn’t a pretty game.”

Hunt went on to praise the Liberian midfielder Sheikh Sesay who scored a cracker to level matters in the dying minutes of the showdown.

Sesay struck from outside the box to send thousands of The Reds supporters into a frenzy.

“But you know, the guy scored a worldly there at the end. He hit it, so fair play to him. He took the chance. But we move on,” he added.

THE RETURN LEG

Matsatsantsa will face The Reds in the second leg on Friday, 29 September 2023.

The game will take place at the New Polokwane Stadium. The kick-off is set for 19:00.

Going into the second leg, SuperSport coach hinted that he’s most likely to make changes in his starting line-up.

“Look, we will have a different team playing the next game,” explained the ex-Kaizer Chiefs coach.
