Kaizer Chiefs revive Luke Fleurs interest: Why?

Kaizer Chiefs are set to revive their interest in Luke Fleurs, who has reportedly left SuperSport United.

FARPost on Sunday reported that SuperSport and Fleurs were in talks to terminate his contract.

On Monday, SABC Sport reported that the player had parted ways with Matsatsantsa. The public broadcaster further said the Tshwane side could not guarantee the former youth international regular minutes.

SuperSport signed Siyanda Xulu, while Ime Okon is highly rated at the club. They have partnered with Thulani Hlatshwayo in central defence, leaving Fleurs in the cold.

The former Ubuntu Football defender has only played a minute this season when he came on as a late substitute against Cape Town City last month.

WHY ARE KAIZER CHIEFS REVIVING INTEREST IN LUKE FLEURS?

Nonetheless, Chiefs, who have previously flirted with the idea of signing the ambidextrous defender, are eager to have a look at him.

Chiefs have invited the centre-back for an assessment at their base in Naturena this week.

He is seen as potentially a good centre-back option as the club looks to create some depth in that department.

At 23, his age is also a significant factor as he is an experienced player who will further develop his game over the coming years.

While the transfer window closes on Friday, Chiefs will have ample time to assess the Cape Town-born star. As a free agent, he will not be affected by the transfer window closure.

“Chiefs’ biggest concern is how he handles himself off the field. That will have a huge bearing on whether they take a risk on him,” a source told FARPost.

Last time around, when Chiefs considered Fleurs, they ended up settling for Thatayaone Ditlhokwe on a pre-contract instead.

Ditlhokwe is settling in well next to Given Msimango in the centre of defence. Chiefs still have Zitha Kwinika, Njabulo Ngcobo, and Edmilson Dove as options.

Despite his young age, Fleurs has a lot of experience, having debuted at 19. He went on to play at the 2021 Olympics, where he played every minute of all three fixtures in Tokyo against hosts Japan, France, and Mexico.
