Riveiro explains the profiling of Patrick Maswanganyi from SuperSport

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has explained the profiling of the club’s new star Patrick Maswanganyi from rivals SuperSport United.

Maswanganyi joined the Bucs ahead of the current PSL season. He has become one of the key players for the Soweto giants and a standout performer.

It may still be early in the season, but the 25-year-old has impressed whenever on the pitch.

The talented attacker nicknamed ‘Tito’ has made seven appearances in Pirates colours in all competitions. He has been directly involved in seven goals; scoring two and providing five assists.

According to the Spaniard, they brought in Maswanganyi because of the type of football they wanted to play.

“The way to profile, the way of playing the type of football you want will determine the profile that you need. Sometimes depending on the environment, the player can look in a different level,” said Riveiro.

“I think the player you mentioned [Patrick Maswanganyi] fits very well in the way we want to play and the needs that we have as a team.

“He’s part of one group of excellent players playing that number 10 position. If you think about number 10, number eight or number eight and a half that we have in the squad, the quality it’s very high and giving us more competition in that position.

“He’s making everybody around and in his position to perform better because of that competition. That’s why if I ask you now the best 10 players in the league probably we going to agree about eight or nine.

“To find the players that will fit in your team, the way that we want to play requires a different type of research. Maybe one of the best players in the league you and I are going to agree that our team is not going to shine at the same level. But we have a good structure at the club doing that research.”

Maswanganyi is in line to feature in their next match against Mamelodi Sundowns. He was rested against Jwaneng Galaxy over the weekend in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round, first leg.

The Pirates-Sundowns encounter headlines the DStv Premiership midweek fixtures. The two sides take it to the field on Wednesday at Orlando Stadium with kickoff set for 7:30 pm.
