Morgan Mammila: ‘Leave this thing of top eight, there’s top four’
Chippa United head coach Morgan Mammila has revealed the number of points they want to amass this season with the club aiming for CAF spots.
Mammila was speaking after his side claimed an away 2-1 victory over Richards Bay FC in the DStv Premiership at King Zwelithini Stadium on Tuesday.
It was the second win for the Chilli Boys this season which saw them climb the table to the fifth position having accumulated nine points in seven games.
The optimistic Mammila says they want to collect at least 54 points in this campaign.
“The thing is I personally tasted top eight four or five months ago [with Moroka Swallows], so I know how does it taste,” Mammila told the journalists.
“So, the plan is to remain in the top eight bracket from match number 10 up until match number 30. And our target is if we can get 54 points, we’ll be fine.”
The former Baroka CEO feels “fighting for the top eight” is old school. He says they want to finish within the top three and he added that Chippa deserves to participate in the CAF inter-club competitions.
MORGAN MAMMILA SAYS CHIPPA UNITED ARE AIMING FOR MORE THAN JUST TOP EIGHT
“That’s the target [finishing in the top three] and we dream big man,” he when further asked about the position they aim for.
“Leave this thing of fighting for the top eight. No! There’s top four there, there’s CAF Confederation Cup, and there’s CAF Champions League.
“If we wanna grow as a team, the brand of the team will go miles away if we play those kinds of competitions. We didn’t know about these Yangas and Simbas, we only see them now in the Confederation Cup and Champions League.
‘CHIPPA IS NUMBER FIVE’
“So, let’s be honest, Chippa have been in football for many years consecutively. I always tell people that Chippa is number five when it comes to the number of years consecutively in PSL.
“Richards Bay just came in, Cape Town City is yesterday’s team, Golden Arrows were relegated and came back. Pokwane City were relegated and came back. With the number of years, Chippa is number five.
“We’re just behind SuperSport [United] because it’s [Kaizer] Chiefs, [Orlando] Pirates, [Mamelodi] Sundowns, SuperSport then it’s Chippa. So, that’s where we belong, this team belongs there.”
