Stellenbosch negotiating with ex-Chiefs player to replace Mthethwa

Stellenbosch FC are in negotiations with the former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder as they intend to replace Sibongiseni Mthethwa.

‘Ox’, as he’s widely known, signed for Amakhosi, having spent less than two years with the Winelands side. Mthethwa had joined Stellies in January 2022 from the Motsepe Foundation Championship side side Black Leopards.

His exit has left a massive void at the club as he was a mainstay for the side in the midfield. Stellies have stepped up their search for the new number six to continue with life without Mthethwa.

FARPost has learnt that Steve Barker’s side has approached Darrel Matsheke’s camp for the player’s services and the negotiations are currently ongoing.

Matsheke recently parted company with the Glamour Boys and has been training with the second-tier side Casric Stars.

Stellenbosch are understood to be convinced the 24-year-old is the right man to go for to complete their youthful team.

STELLENBOSCH HOPING TO COMPLETE MATSHEKE DEAL BY NEXT WEEK

“Stellenbosch are negotiating with Darrel, they believe he can replace Mthethwa,” a source told FARPost.

“The deal could be wrapped up next week.

“The boy has been training with Casric Stars. However, Stellenbosch really want him badly and could soon land his signature.”

Matsheke emerged from Chiefs Youth Academy and was promoted to the first team in 2020 during Gavin Hunt’s tenure. He spent the following season on loan in the second-tier with the now-defunct Uthongathi FC.

Last season, he had a second loan spell with Moroka Swallows where he played 19 games in the DStv Premiership. Meanwhile, during his debut season at Naturena, he featured in 12 matches across all competitions.

Matsheke was part of the side that reached the CAF Champions League final in the 2020/21 season. He got minutes when they played with CD Primeiro de Agosto in the preliminary round and Horoya AC in the group stages.
