Cavin Johnson lands Kaizer Chiefs role
Former Al Ahly assistant coach Cavin Johnson has reportedly landed a role at DStv Premiership giants Kaizer Chiefs.
Amakhosi recently made a bold move by appointing renowned sports psychologist Dr Henning Gericke to their technical team as a high-performance coach.
His pioneering appointment followed the return of revered goalkeeper coach Rainer Dinkelacker.
The experienced figures are expected to assist head coach Molefi Ntseki as he works towards restoring the glory days at Amakhosi.
Ntseki was handed the coaching reins ahead of the 2023/24 season, replacing Arthur Zwane. Zwane returned to the assistant coach position he previously held.
Now, the club has hired Johnson, who has been assisting Motsepe Foundation Championship side NB La Masia while waiting for the “right project”.
WHAT CAVIN JOHNSON’S ROLE WILL ENTAIL
According to information reaching FARPost, Johnson’s primary focus will be in the Kaizer Chiefs academy. However, indications are that he will also assist with scouting duties at the club.
The role sounds tailor-made for the 64-year-old mentor, who strongly advocates for youth development.
The former Platinum Stars, SuperSport United and AmaZulu coach is one of many coaches who came under the tutelage of the late Ted Dumitru.
Before taking up the Platinum Stars role in 2012, he worked as a youth and assistant coach for various clubs in South Africa. He previously headed the youth development office at Ajax Cape Town.
La Masia head coach Delano Hendricks recently highlighted the former School of Excellence coach’s extensive scouting work.
“It’s a dream come true because if you look at Cavin’s CV, he’s got two CAF Champions League medals,” Hendricks told FARPost recently. “He’s been in the game for many years.
“I always hear people talk about players they have produced. If we start jotting down the number of graduates he has, this man is probably well over the 300-400 mark.”
He has been out of work since leaving as an assistant coach at Al Ahly late in 2021. In recent months, he has been providing his expertise to his community club, La Masia.
Among the current players that came through his hands are Portugal-based Kobamelo Kodisang, Clayton Daniels, Cole Alexander and Gift Links, who plies his trade in Denmark.
His appointment at Kaizer Chiefs will be a significant coup for the Soweto giants who are looking to revive their junior development.
The club reportedly wants to ensure a seamless progression of youth talents who will carry the senior team in years to come.
