CONFIRMED: Cavin Johnson’s role at Kaizer Chiefs in 2023

Cavin Johnson’s role at Kaizer Chiefs has been explained following the club’s announcement on Friday.

As first reported by FARPost, Johnson has been appointed as the new head of the Academy at Chiefs. The portfolio includes full oversight of the Club’s youth academy and scouting network.

The club’s Sporting Director, Kaizer Motaung Jr explained: “We are delighted to bring Coach Cavin on board.

“He brings a wealth of knowledge that will continue to build our Academy programs and scouting network in order to take the Club forward with the aim of imprinting the Kaizer Chiefs philosophy throughout every level of the club.”

He believes Johnson possesses all the attributes to steer the club in the direction they want to go. The Soweto giants want to create an elite development model that will lead them to sustainable success in the future.

At Amakhosi, the 64-year-old reunites with Dillon Sheppard, whom he coached at the Transnet School of Excellence. Sheppard is the assistant coach of Chiefs.

WHAT CAVIN JOHNSON’S ROLE AT CHIEFS ENTAILS

The ex-Al Ahly assistant coach is a holder of a UEFA professional coaching license, with a bias towards youth football. He also holds coaching qualifications obtained via CAF, the Dutch Football Association and the Brazilian CBF. 

Johnson was previously the Director of the Royal Bafokeng Sports Academy between 2008 and 2012.

He is credited for helping develop the Platinum Stars academy. Johnson went on to have stints as head coach of Platinum Stars, SuperSport United, AmaZulu and Black Leopards.

His most recent job was an assistant coach position at Al Ahly under Pitso Mosimane. Together, they won two CAF Champions League winners medals in 2020 and 2021.

He left the Cairo giants in September 2021. Lately, he has been providing guidance to Motsepe Foundation Championship side, NB La Masia.

“I’m happy to join Kaizer Chiefs as Head of Youth and the scouting department. For me, joining Amakhosi means joining an institution. I’m also happy to bring along all my experience that I have gained over the past 20-25 years of working with youth,” he said.

He added his aim was to unearth and develop the next Doctor Khumalos, Ace Khuses, Jabu Pules, Tinashe Nengomashas. His task is to facilitate the development of players who can excel in the senior team.
