Former SuperSport defender trying his luck at Chippa United

A former SuperSport United defender is training with the DStv Premiership side Chippa United, hoping to win a contract with them before the transfer window closes on Friday.

Siyabonga Nhlapo has been trying his luck with the Gqeberha-based outfit for a week to convince their head coach, Morgan Mammila, to join them.

The 34-year-old spent six years at SuperSport United but left after his contract with the three-time PSL champions expired. He was not part of Gavin Hunt’s plans for this season.

The veteran player has been in the game for more than a decade. He has played for Jomo Cosmos, Bidvest Wits, and Highland Park.

“He’s been in Port Elizabeth training with Chippa United for over a week, but the club hasn’t said anything yet,” a club source told FARPost.

HOW CHIPPA UNITED DEFENDERS HAVE FARED THIS SEASON

But this season, Chippa defenders Zuko, Mdunyelwa, Roscoe Pieterse, Justice Chabalala, and Azola Ntsabo have been solid for the Chilli Boys. They have conceded seven goals in seven goals.

The Chilli Boys are currently sixth on the log after seven games player. Nhlapo’s versatility could work to his advantage as he can play as a defender and midfielder.

In their seven opening league matches, Chippa won two, drew three, and lost two.

Meanwhile, former Motsepe Foundation Championship side Pretoria Callies defender Aviwe Nyamende is also training with Chilli Boys. He is hoping to win a contract with them like Nhlapo.

Nyamende is familiar with Chippa, as he played for them before while they were still in the lower Vodacom League and based in Cape Town.

The club went on social media two months ago, inviting profiles for left-backs. That move suggested they were in the market for a central defender.

It appears they are still in the market as they look to avoid fighting relegation like last season. Mammila has vowed that his target is a top-five finish this season, which would be a club record.
