Sundowns beat Chiefs to secure a spot in the MTN8 final
Mamelodi Sundowns beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 at a sold out Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday to secure a spot in the MTN8 final.
The ach-rivals were meeting for the third time this season. In the first match Sundowns won 2-1 in the DStv Premiership. In the first leg of the competition it ended as a 1-1 draw at FNB Stadium.
Peter Shalulile scored a first half brace where as Ashley Du Preez scored for Chiefs.
Last season, both teams were knocked out of the tournament in the semifinals by AmaZulu and Orlando Pirates respectively.
LESS CHANGES IN THE LINE-UPS FROM BOTH TEAMS
The two sides didn’t make drastic changes to their starting line-ups. The hosts made two changes as Mothobi Mvala and Khuliso Mudau made way for Mosa Lebusa and Grant Kekana.
As for the away side, Molefi Ntseki only made three changes. Itumeleng Khune, Zitha Kwinika and Jasond Gonzalez were replaced by Brandon Petersen, Reeve Frosler and Tebogo Potsane.
ACTION PACKED FIRST HALF
Masandawana broke the deadlock as early as the first minute. Peter Shalulile found the back of the net from close range.
Amakhosi found an equaliser in the 34th minute through Ashley Du Preez after converting a penalty.
At the stroke of half time, the scoreline changed to 2-1 as Shalulile restored Tshwane giants’ lead heading to the break.
The second half was less in action. The Glamour Boys tried everything in their power to score the second goal but failed to find the back of the net.
Sundowns stood firm at the back as the Rulani Mokwena-coached side cruised to the final.
WHO SUNDOWNS WILL MEET IN THE FINAL
As a result, the Tshwane giants will either meet Orlando Pirates or Stellenbosch FC in the final.
The two sides will battle it out for a spot in the final on Sunday 24 September at Orlando Stadium. Pirates had into the encounter leading 2-1.
