Rulani Mokwena weighs in on Mudau’s exclusion in Bafana squad

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has weighed in on Khuliso Mudau’s exclusion in the Bafana Bafana squad.

The pacey wing-back has been overlooked by Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos.

He was left out of the Bafana squad that played two friendlies against Namibia and DR Congo early this month.

Mudau was a notable absentee in the Sundowns’ MTN8 semi-final clash against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.

Sundowns beat the Soweto-based outfit 2-1 in the second leg of the MTN8 semi-finals to book a spot in the final.

The former Black Leopards star missed the Sundowns clash against Amakhosi through suspension after accumulating his fourth yellow card of the season against Orlando Pirates in the DStv Premiership last Wednesday.

Mudau has been with Sundowns for four seasons after joining the club at the start of the 2020/21 campaign from Leopards.

Despite Mudau being called up in the recent Bafana preliminary squad for October friendlies against Eswatini and Cote d’Ivoire, Mokwena has questioned his past exclusions in the team.

“Losing Mudau is massive, he defends well, he has speed and power, and he attacks well,” Mokwena said.

“I heard Mark Gleeson [SuperSport commentator] in the previous game against Pirates saying it bobbles his mind that Mudau is not in the national team.

“I agree with him. Mudau is a defender of the season. He’s a specimen and his qualities are unbelievable.”

Mokwena further explained the importance of Mothobi Mvala who was also suspended for the MTN8 encounter.

“Mothobi has become so important for us not just from a build-up perspective. His ability to find a pass in the next line and help us beat the press. The physicality on set pieces.

“His ability to defend one-on-one, sometimes to be brave in defending against strikers. But let’s give credit to Mosa Lebusa because I thought he did very well. Grant [Kekana] also did very well.”
