Jethren Barr offered contract by European club

While he has been on PSL clubs’ radars, South Africa overseas-based goalkeeper Jethren Barr has been offered a contract by a European club.

Barr has been without a club since he left the Northern Ireland side Portadown in June. This was after the club’s relegation to the NIFL Championship.

During the COSAFA Cup in July, the 27-year-old reminded the South Africans of his abilities when he featured for Bafana Bafana in three matches.

Four weeks ago, Barr confirmed to this publication that three DStv Premiership teams and three Motsepe Foundation Championship sides were interested in his services.

He rejected all offers from the second-tier. Meanwhile, he was also clear that he would only consider the DStv Premiership switch if it’s a “top club”.

At the time, the man from Pinetown, Durban was training with Shamrock Rovers who are currently on top of the League of Ireland Premier Division with the league nearing its end.

He has now been offered a contract by Derry City, the rivals of Shamrock Rovers. City are chasing Shamrock in the league and are only five points behind.

JETHREN BARR OFFERED A CONTRACT BY IRISH TOP SIDE DERRY CITY

“I got offered a contract by Derry City, so I stopped training with them [Shamrock Rovers] to join Derry City,” Barr confirmed to FARPost.

However, in Ireland, free agents cannot be registered between 1 September and 30 November. Thus, Barr has not yet been added to the squad.

The club can only register him from 1 December.

“I’ve been training with Derry now until the contract is sorted. The trouble is Derry got back to me now. You can’t register free agents or players between 31 August and 30 November.”

The League of Ireland Premier Division will come to an end on 3 November this year. Meanwhile, the new season will begin in February. And Barr would get back to action then should Derry City register him.
