Matlou weighs in on Chiefs’ start to the new season

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou has weighed in on his side’s start to the 2023/24 PSL season.

It hasn’t been the kind of start Chiefs faithful may have hoped for as the team is struggling for form and grinding results.

They are eighth on the DStv Premiership log after seven matches; with two wins, two draws, and three defeats.

To make matters worse, the Glamour Boys were knocked out of the MTN8 in the semifinals over the past weekend by rivals Mamelodi Sundowns losing 3-2 on aggregate.

The 25-year-old says they have been playing well, creating goalscoring opportunities but they are only lacking goals.

“I don’t think it’s a poor start, you can see how we playing. It’s just a matter of scoring goals,” said Matlou.

“We just lack that luck in us, it’s not like we not creating opportunities. We do get there, but goals are not there. But they are coming, we working very hard.

“Of course we playing for a team like Kaizer Chiefs, we have pressure everywhere. You can win one nil, people will talk about it so it’s either you win and keep it on.”

The former Moroka Swallows midfielder believes that the new additions have done a great job so far.

The Soweto giants invested so much in their squad during the transfer window bringing in nine new faces. These are namely; Mduduzi Mdantsane, Pule Mmodi, Tebogo Potsane, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, Given Msimango, Ranga Chivaviro, Edson Castillo, Jasond Gonzalez and Sibongiseni Mthethwa.

“The new signings like Pule [Mmodi], the connection is good, we know each other well, they’ve been doing good, we can’t say it’s a poor start.

“We just have to help each other and move forward. We in this boat together, whatever happens we all in. No one is supposed to jump off the train now, so we moving forward,” he added.
