Brandon Truter makes bold claim after Chiefs defeat

Sekhukhune United head coach Brandon Truter has made a bold claim after his side lost to Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday evening.

Babina Noko suffered their third loss in the DStv Premiership this season, losing 2-1 to Amakhosi at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. The other two defeats came at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows.

The Limpopo outfit bottled their 1-0 lead, allowing Chiefs to come back after Elias Mokwana opened the scoring in the first half.

However, for the most part of the game, the Soweto giants seemed to be a cut above the visitors. Chiefs took seven shots on target while Sekhukhune had three.

Amakhosi also kept the ball better with 56% possession as compared to Sekhukhune’s 44%. Further, Ntseki’s side enjoyed 444 passes while last season’s Nedbank Cup finalists made 360.

However, giving his impressions of the game in the press conference, Truter said they could have buried Chiefs early with the chances they created particularly in the first half.

He believes they “beat themselves” considering individuals’ mistakes on the day.

“I’m not sure if it’s the press conferences or interviews after the game so quickly when the emotions are still too high from coaches,” said Truter.

“I’m tempted to say or I’m going to say we beat ourselves tonight, no disrespect to Kaizer Chiefs. Maybe it’s emotions talking but the fact is we made too many mistakes tonight.

“We had clear-cut chances tonight, we should have punished them. What we’re lacking is clinical from the front, from the players that get these chances. We need to target away, we bury teams in the first halves.

“Royal AM last week, the same scenario, we took one. We had so many chances in the first half. The CAF game should have been five, six and I think it’s us.

“I think it’s a South African problem at the moment. We score one or two, we’re not taking the chances. But from us is definitely something to work on. It’s something we need to eradicate.

“We have employed Collins Mbesuma, the strikers’ coach to remedy that situation. So, we are mindful about it.”

Truter’s men are now shifting focus to the CAF Confederation Cup as they will be flying out to DR Congo for the second preliminary round return tie against FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo.

Sekhukhune won the first leg 3-1 earlier this month and have the advantage in qualifying for the next round.
