‘Ridiculous’ CAF rules frustrate coach Gavin Hunt
SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has described the CAF coaching licence rules that prohibit him from sitting on the bench as ‘ridiculous’.
Hunt sat in the stands as his side beat Gaborone United 3-0 to advance to the Confederation Cup group stage at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday.
Instead, Roscoe Krieling and Andre Arendse took charge of Hunt’s troops on the night.
CAF COACHING LICENCE FRUSTRATE GAVIN HUNT
CAF recently introduced the basic mandatory requirement for all coaches in Inter-clubs competitions. Coaches, who do not have a CAF A licence or a Pro licence from UEFA, AFC, and CONCACAF are not allowed to sit on the bench while assistant coaches are required to hold a CAF B Licence.
“It’s very frustrating. I mean I sat on the bench for the past 25 years and all of a sudden I can’t sit on the bench,” said Hunt, who holds a UEFA A licence.
“I don’t know, so yeah it’s disappointing but we will try and get the convention done. Whatever I have to get done, in November but we will see.
“I don’t know why it has changed, I have a UEFA A licence. I was also on the bench in the quarterfinal and semi-final of the CAF Champions League with [Kaizer] Chiefs about two years ago. All the years at [Bidvest] Wits and SuperSport I sat on the bench, played all the games, Group stage. There was never a problem but something has happened,” said Hunt.
SUPERSPORT UNITED COACH FINDS NEW RULES RIDICULOUS
“But I mean it’s ridiculous, that I can’t be involved but I don’t know what’s going to happen. Can you sit on the bench with a CAF C licence?
“Both my daughters have CAF C licences. They have never kicked a ball in their lives. Maybe they can sit on the bench you know,” he said jokingly.
SuperSport United will be hoping to have Hunt back on the bench before the Group stages commence in November. The draw is likely to take place in mid-October but CAF are yet to announce full details.
