Mokwena on why more Sundowns players deserves to be in Bafana Bafana
Rulani Mokwena has explained why he feels more of his Mamelodi Sundowns players deserve a place in the Bafana Bafana set-up.
Sundowns have been providing the highest number of players in the Bafana Bafana squad more than any PSL club.
Top-performing Sundowns players that include Themba Zwane, Ronwen Williams, Teboho Mokoena and Mothobi Mvala have been regulars.
And with Bafana Bafana set to play two more friendly, against Eswatini and Côte d’Ivoire, ten Mamelodi Sundowns players were drafted in a 36-member preliminary squad.
Six Orlando Pirates players were called up by the Belgian mentor. Four Kaizer Chiefs were also selected including their latest signing Sibongiseni Mthethwa.
SuperSport United had four of their players named in the team including teenage defender Ice Okon.
Roving Sekhukhune United right-back Nyiko Mobbie retained his place in Hugo Broos’ arsenal.

And though, his team dominates the number in Bafana Bafana squad, Rulani Mokwena feels more of his men deserve to be recognised.
Mokwena, however singled out defender Rivaldo Coetzee for a place in the national team.
“I met coach Hugo [Broos] in person for the first time at Orlando Stadium and we exchanged kind words.
“It’s quite alot that we are going to discuss especially that there is a majority of Masandawana players in the Bafana squad.
“And I have a feeling that they should be more of them based on the performances of the players,” he said.
MOKWENA SPEAKS ON MERITOCRACY
The Mamelodi Sundowns tactician emphasized that Hugo Broos’ selection should be based merit.
“And also based on the fact that the national team should be about meritocracy. The best players must play for the national team.
“Even though I must make a disclaimer that we have to understand and respect Hugo Broos’ role as a coach. He will always have my support,” Mokwena said.
