Truter reacts to Sekhukhune’s historic Confed Cup Group stage qualification

Sekhukhune United coach Brandon Truter has reacted to his side’s historic CAF Confederation Cup group stage qualification.

The DStv Premiership side went through to the group stages of the CAF Confed Cup for the first time following a 1-1 draw away to Saint Eloi Lupopo on Sunday, winning 4-2 on aggregate.

Babina Noko beat the DR Congo side 3-1 a fortnight ago at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Sekhukhun United’s goal came via new signing Tiklas Thutlwa in the second half while the home side scored through an Emmanuel Bola first-half penalty.

They joined fellow South African side SuperSport United, who have also secured a spot in the group stages after eliminating Gaborone United.

Both clubs will know their group-stage opponents when CAF conducts the official draw this month.

Head coach Truter has applauded the players’ character displayed at Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa.

“A very, very tough game. Excluding traveling, excluding the fact that we played on an astroturf and the heat as well,” he said.

“At times it was unbearable but today [on Sunday] it was all about character. I think everybody that was called upon, each player did very well. They knew what was required here, we didn’t risk the fact that we had a two-goal lead.

“They put us under pressure. We knew coming here that the two-goal lead wouldn’t be safe and we needed to score. They put us under pressure from the first whistle and we conceded an early goal and they put us under more pressure,” added Truter.

BRANDON TRUTER CREDITS HIS PLAYERS CHARACTER

“It was more about the character, the attitude, the will to win, and the effort the boys put in. So as much as I give credit to the boys, we also give credit to God. It’s not an easy place to come to, so yeah the results are about the boys and we move on to the next round.”

Sekhukhune United will return to domestic league action when they host Golden Arrows on Thursday, 5 October.
