Bradley Grobler’s brace sinks Spurs at Athlone

Bradley Grobler’s brace condemned Cape Town Spurs to their eighth consecutive DStv Premiership defeat on Wednesday, as SuperSport United won 2-1 at Athlone Stadium.

Heading into the encounter, SuperSport were a motivated side. They advanced to the CAF Confederation Cup group stages as they beat Botswana side Gaborone United 4-1 on aggregate.

On the other side, the Capetonians were desperate for a win following seven straight defeats in the league which led to the sacking of coach Shaun Bartlett.

The loss left Spurs still without a point this season as they remained bottom in the log standings. Matsatsantsa moved to second with 16 points from eight encounters.

HOW CAPE TOWN SPURS AND SUPERSPORT UNITED LINED UP

The hosts made five changes to a team that lost iKapa Derby against Cape Town City FC last time out. Lubeni Haukongo, Nicholus Lukhubeni, Keagan Buchanan, Khaya Mfecane, and Therlo Moosa replaced Logan Brown, Clayton Daniels, Chumani Butsaka, Jarrod Moroole, and Ashley Cupido.

As for the visitors, there were only four changes. Washington Arubi, Jesse Donn, Shandre Campbell, and Keenan Bezuidenhout were replaced by Ricardo Goss, Gape Moralo, Lyle Lakay, and Bradley Grobler.

Spurs opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute. Therlo Moosa broke the deadlock through a header, thanks to an assist by Luvuyo Phewa.

Just after the half-hour mark, it was all squared as Bradley Grobler found an equaliser for the Tshwane side. On the stroke of half-time SuperSport almost made it 2-1 through Etiosa Ighodaro, however his shot was wide at goal.

The two sides went into the break level at 1-1 as the two sides couldn’t be separated. Four minutes before full-time Grobler broke Spurs’ hearts as he completed his brace.
