Broos points out reason for Sundowns’ struggles in Champions League semis

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has pointed out why Mamelodi Sundowns struggle to reach the CAF Champions League final.

The Belgian coach has once again criticised the level of competitiveness in the DStv Premiership. He feels the PSL clubs don’t give Mamelodi Sundowns a run for their money.

According to Broos, the Tshwane giants have already run away with the league again as they are currently seven points ahead of the second-placed Golden Arrows. He says the competition will be wrapped up in February or March.

The 2017 AFCON winning coach believes Sundowns aren’t used to playing difficult matches weak in, week out locally. Hence, when they face tough opponents in the Champions League quarter-finals or semi-finals, they struggle to go through.

HUGO BROOS SAYS WEAK PSL TEAMS ARE REASON WHY SUNDOWNS STRUGGLE IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

“You know when you play every week against a very good opponent, you become better, everyone becomes better,” said Broos.

“So, for Pirates maybe they will not agree with me but Pirates win games too easily. So, this is not good for them. It should be more battle every week to win the game.

“And you see in Europe in those big competitions, the final of the Champions League is always played by one of the teams from those countries [who have strong teams] because every week they have to struggle, they have to battle for winning.

“And maybe it is one of the reasons that every time for Sundowns in the quarterfinal or in the semi-final, they are out. Because yes this is a very tough game every time, you play against a very tough opponent.”

Broos has called on the Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Pirates to pull up their socks so it can not be a piece of cake for Masandawana.

“So, it’s not good either for Sundowns and I hope that Chiefs and Pirates are becoming the teams that they were before I was here. It was always the struggle between those teams to be champions,” he continued.

“The last two years there’s no battle anymore, Sundowns is already ten or eight points ahead. They will be champions again in February or March and that’s really not good for South African football.”
