DONE DEAL: Stellenbosch FC complete signing of Mthethwa’s replacement
Stellenbosch FC have wrapped up the signing of the replacement of Sibongiseni Mthethwa who left to join Kaizer Chiefs two weeks ago.
‘Ox’ switched to the Soweto giants, leaving Stellies after a less than two years stay at the club. He had made over 50 appearances in all competitions and his departure came just after he had been appointed the club’s vice captain.
Following Mthethwa’s exit, Steve Barker understood he’d have to beef up the midfield with another addition.
Stellenbosch have signed the former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Darrel Matsheke on a one-year deal and an option to extend for a further year, the player’s agent Gerald Baloyi of Vodia Players Management has confirmed to FARPost.
As previously reported, Stellies enquired about Matsheke’s services on the day Mthethwa left. And the Chiefs academy product has been training with Steve Barker’s side in Western Cape for over a week now as the talks were continuing between the club and his camp.
DARREL MATSHEKE SECURE DEAL WITH STELLENBOSCH FC
“We have finally concluded the talks with Stellenbosch,” Baloyi confirmed to FARPost.
“Darrel has signed a one-year deal and an option to extend next year.”
Matsheke left the Phefeni Glamour Boys permanently at the end of the previous campaign after the end of his contract. And prior to joining Stellies, he was training with the Mpumalanga outfit Casric Stars hoping for a contract.
Matsheke spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Moroka Swallows and made 19 appearances in the DStv Premiership.
Meanwhile, in the 2021/22 campaign, he had his first loan spell with the now-defunct Motsepe Foundation Championship side Uthongathi FC.
Matsheke will be fighting for a starting berth with the likes of Sihle Nduli and Qobolwakhe Sibande who can also play as a left-back. In the previous three matches, Nduli, who’s a central midfielder, has been playing deep after Sibongiseni Mthethwa left the void.
