The one position that has left Hugo Broos fretting
Bafana Bafana tactician Hugo Broos has opened up on the one position that has been giving him sleepless nights ahead of crucial continental assignments.
Broos feels he is spoilt for choice in most of the national team’s departments, as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the AFCON finals.
But the only position that has left him fretting, with none of his targets living up to his expectations mainly due to lack of game time.
The Bafana Bafana tactician is struggling to find a player that would replace the Mamelodi Sundowns maestro, Themba Zwane.
The creative Zwane can play on both wings but Hugo Broos has often deployed him as the Bafana Bafana attacking midfield hub.
WHAT HUGO BROOS SAID ABOUT FINDING FINDING A BACK-UP FOR ZWANE
Hugo Broos was reluctant to reveal the players he has been vetting to be backup options if Zwane gets injured.
“I don’t think this is the right place to tell which players we are looking at for the position. When I say A and then I tag B, A will be disappointed.
“So it’s up to them to go on, but again, they are not always playing either. And this is the problem for me. So let’s hope they will get a chance in the next months. It will be maybe more for AFCON than the qualifiers in November.
“But it’s the only position in the team that worries me a little bit certainly in terms of the fact that if one day Themba [Zwane] will be injured again.
“For him, it will be very tough to play every game from minute one to 90. So we need to have an alternative. I hope we find this,” Broos said.
The 34-year-old is expected to play a leading role when Bafana start the World Cup qualifiers and the AFCON finals.
For the World Cup qualifiers, Bafana are in Group C which consists of Nigeria, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and Benin.
Meanwhile, they are penciled to take on Eswatini and Ivory Coast in two international friendlies this month.
