New Cup Competition evokes old memories for Gavin Hunt

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt says the newly introduced Carling Knockout Cup evokes old memories for him.

Hunt has commended the introduction of more competitions in the PSL following the official launch and draw of the Carling Knockout Cup. The Knockout tourney brings to four the number of domestic competitions, excluding the CAF Inter-club competitions.

The new Cup is set to kick off in October with the Final taking place in December. While other teams might feel there are too many competitions with limited resources, for Hunt the new competition brings back good old memories.

HUNT SHARES GOOD OLD MEMORIES

“These competitions are fantastic for the clubs, for the teams and it gives you extra games,” he said.

“I mean this goes back to my days before you guys were born. Datsun Challenge, do you remember that? The double-headers at Ellis Park, I played in those [competitions]. So this competition goes back a long way, I am glad they brought it back. It was only the right thing to do so yeah, JPS [Competition], all those times you know.

“I am glad Black Label has come back in and we are really honoured, privileged and lucky to have a competition that put money in and they have really put money in this time. I would rather be a player, R100 000 Man of the Match,” he said.

Hunt also reacted to the seedings and draw that saw them pitted against newly promoted Polokwane City at home.

“The seeding is right. It’s always done like that, top eight and the bottom right. It’s always done like that, it has never changed and that’s right.

“They [Polokwane City] have done well, they have come right and have few good signings. Douglas Mapfumo, I signed him at [Bidvest] Wits three, four years ago, so he is coming to his own now,” added Gavin Hunt.

“They have good experience and good youth, so it’s always difficult to play against. They are hard running and the more they have coaches changing the more they fight and it won’t be an easy game.”

The PSL is yet to announce details of the dates and venues of the last 16 round.
