Orlando Pirates star withdrawn from Bafana Bafana squad

An Orlando Pirates star has been withdrawn from the Bafana Bafana squad ahead to two upcoming international friendlies in October.

Bafana Bafana assembled on Monday for camp as they prepare to take on Eswatini and Cote d’Ivoire in the international friendlies.

The head coach of Bafana Hugo Broos is already without a number of his regulars after Percy Tau was also left out of the squad due to “family reasons”. And other players didn’t make the final cut because of injuries.

However, Tau featured for his club Al Ahly on Saturday against Ismaily SC in the Egyptian Premier League and Broos said he was “not amused” after seeing that. Meanwhile, Broos has slammed clubs for dishonesty on the unavailability of players.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns attacker, Tau, was subsequently replaced by Kaizer Chiefs’ Mduduzi Mdantsane.

With South Africa gearing up for two international friendlies, SAFA confirmed the unavailability of the Pirates star Monnapule Saleng.

The Buccaneers winger has been withdrawn from the squad due to illness. Saleng took part in the Pirates’ MTN8 final win over Masandawana at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

The former Moroka Swallows winger will be replaced by Cape Town City attacker Khanyisa Mayo.

“We got the report that Monnapule Saleng was having an illness,” Bafana doctor Thabo Maleka told SAFA media.

“He came, we assessed him. Indeed, we certified that he does have an acute illness and is therefore unable to join the camp.

“Obviously, that necessitated the replacement and I think the coaches have managed to replace the player Khanyisa [Mayo] and we’ll also assess him to see how he joins the team.”

SA will face Eswatini on Friday at FNB Stadium before taking on Cote d’Ivoire away on 17 October.
