Patrick Maswanganyi on what Pirates should do to win the league

Following their MTN8 final triumph against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, Patrick Maswanganyi has discussed what Orlando Pirates need to do to win the league.

Pirates beat Sundowns 3-1 on penalties at Moses Mabhida Stadium to defend the MTN8 trophy.

The Buccaneers have had a slow start to the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season. They have won two games, and drawn one while losing two of the five they have played. They are lying 14th on the league table with seven points.

Pirates have been tipped to challenge Sundowns in the league race after making a handful of high-profile signings at the start of the campaign.

The Sea Robbers signed Karim Kimvuidi, Siphelo Baloni, Katlego Otladisa, Lesedi Kapinga, Patrick Maswanganyi, Melusi Buthelezi and Siphamandla Gumede.

With Pirates seemingly struggling for consistency in the league, Maswanganyi has revealed what his club can do to challenge Sundowns.

“I think we started a bit slow with a loss [against Stellenbosch FC] in our first game, we managed to win other games. But we haven’t been consistent with our performances,” Maswanganyi said ON on Metro FM

“So, I think this one [MTN8 title] is going to boost us to be more consistent enough if we want to win the league. So, we have to work hard and try to improve our weaknesses and also to score more goals and fight as a team,”

Meanwhile, Masandawana have had a flying start to the 2023/24 campaign after winning all their opening eight games in the league.

The Chloorkop-based side has accumulated 24 points and opened a seven-point gap between them and the second-placed Golden Arrows.

The Brazilians clinched the league title six times in a row and Pirates will be looking to stop them from winning their seventh league honours.
