Why former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder is missing in action at AmaTuks

University of Pretoria [AmaTuks] head coach Tlisane Motaung has explained why former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Thokozani Sekotlong is missing in action.

Sekotlong has yet to feature for AmaTuks since the start of the 2023/24 Motsepe Foundation Championship season.

The Tshwane-based side has had an inconsistent start to the new season after winning three games, drawing three and losing one. AmaTuks, who are aiming for DStv premiership promotion, are sitting sixth on the log after accumulating 12 points in seven matches.

Meanwhile, Sekotlong who joined AmaTuks in December 2022 on a free transfer has been a notable absentee in the club’s matchday squad.

The well-travelled attacker joined Tuks alongside another ex-Mamelodi Sundowns player Rodney Ramagalela who has since parted ways with the club.

With Sekotlong missing all the opening seven games of the campaign for AmaTuks, Tlisane Motaung has given reasons for his absence.

“Look Thokozani Sekotlong has been a bit unlucky with injuries, that’s why he’s yet to play for us,” Motaung told FARPost.

“He sustained an injury during the final stages of the pre-season and he’s been working hard to get back to full fitness.

“I mean he’s not far from making the return to full fitness, he busy with his rehabilitation.

“Hopefully after the FIFA break Sekotlong will be close if not ready because we need his experience to fight for promotion,”

Motaung further gave an update of Sihle Gum who joined Tuks from Casric Stars at the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

“Sihle Gum missed our last three games due to injury but his injury wasn’t that serious, so he’s also working his way back to full fitness.

“I believe if we can get the full completement of our squad, we can definitely start seeing good results because gaining promotion to the PSL is our ultimate goal.”
