Kaizer Motaung Jnr: ‘We’re not done yet’
Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr has vowed that they are not resting on their laurels despite a hugely positive transfer window, as the intention is to “take things to the next level”.
Chiefs had arguably their best transfer window in as many years, with their new players settling in well at Naturena. Edson Castillo, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, Pule Mmodi, Given Msimango, and Sibongiseni ‘Ox’ Mthethwa have had positive starts to their careers at Amakhosi.
A lot is expected from the other new signings Ranga Chivaviro, Jasond Gonzalez, Tebogo Potsane, and Mduduzi Mdantsane in the PSL.
Nonetheless, Motaung Jnr insists strengthening their squad and other aspects of the club is an ongoing process. The DStv Premiership giants are eager to end their eight-year trophy drought, with some good activity in the transfer market.
“We have a very new team. If you think about us having nine players this year and others from last year, coupled with some of the youngsters from the academy,” Kaizer Motaung Jnr said.
“If we’re all objective and honest, it’s a new team. It takes time to be able to get a consistent base of all these players from different environments to fall into one line in terms of where you want to go. We made a conscious effort in our direction and recruitment in key areas that we thought were very important for us to fix in the short term. But it’s gotta also fall in line with the plan.”
‘KAIZER CHIEFS ARE A WORK IN PROGRESS’
He added that the plan in the recently ended transfer window was to address some key areas. This is a process that will continue as they look to assemble a competitive team. “We can’t be too busy trying to fix all the holes immediately. I think we’re building a good mix of experience and youth in the team.
“We know the positives. And we also can’t run away from the fact that we don’t want to be in position eight. We don’t want to be out of the MTN8. A club of this size that’s not where you want to be. I think with the bunch of players we’ve put together and the reasoning behind this mix, I think we’re very optimistic about the direction we’re going.”
He believes the team will be in a better position when the current group “can gel and play together and be as one group”
“You find some teams have had three, four, five seasons together, and they are reaping the rewards. “We’re very confident of the squad we’ve assembled. We’re not finished in any regard, we’re always looking to evolve and take things to the next level.”
He called on the Khosi nation to back the team as they work towards getting back to the top.
“Everyone who’s associated with the badge, we’re asking our supporters to come on board and support the guys.
“Be that 12th man, we need them. We hear them and understand where they’re coming from. At the same time, we ask them to support the coach, the technical staff, and the players. We ask them to rally behind everyone…”
