Steve Komphela on his conversation with Chaine: What was said
Moroka Swallows coach Steve Komphela has revealed the conversation he once had with Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.
The two parties know each other very well having worked together at the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic back in 2018. At that time, Chaine was only aged 21 and was still trying to build himself a name in the South African topflight.
Five years down the line, the 26-year-old is the number-one goalkeeper for Soweto giants Orlando Pirates.
Recently, Chaine turned out a hero in the penalty shootout against Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final. He helped the Sea Robbers to successfully defend their title, saving three penalties.
STEVE KOMPHELA TOLD SIPHO CHAINE THAT HE WILL HAVE A GREAT CAREER IN FOOTBALL
According to the 56-year-old mentor, he told Chaine that he would have a bright future in football and would be a great goalkeeper.
“Go ask Sipho [Chaine] what I said to him. We were playing in the Macufe Cup against Kaizer Chiefs at Vodacom Park,” said Komphela.
“I told him straight, I still remember vividly the tight he was wearing, it was more colourful and that.
“I said to him, ‘You are going places my friend and you’ll be great [one day].’ What happened [against Sundowns in the MTN8 final? It’s only shocking for those who don’t follow the game.”
HOW SIPHO CHAINE HAS FARED FOR ORLANDO PIRATES
Chaine joined the Happy People just after the start of the 2022/23 season to help address the goalkeeping situation at the club that needed attention.
Richard Ofori was out with a long-term injury setback. Siyabonga Mpontsane had been inconsistent in between the sticks making many mistakes.
As a whole, Chaine has played 32 matches in all competitions and has kept 12 clean sheets in the process.
