TS Galaxy eliminate 10-man Sundowns in CKO after penalty shootout

TS Galaxy eliminated 10-man Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout Cup round of 16 tie on Wednesday at Mbombela Stadium winning 5-4 on penalties.

The match had ended 2-2 after extra time. Both sides couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes. As a result, The Rockets had to book their quarter-final place via the penalty shootout.

Sphiwe Mahlangu and Mlungisi Mbunjana had put Galaxy in the lead, while Marcelo Allende and Gaston Sirino were on target for Sundowns.

The Brazilians had to play much of the second half one man down after Bongani Zungu was red-carded for a crude tackle on Bernard Parker. Parker looked to have broken his leg from that tackle.

HOW MAMELODI SUNDOWNS LINED-UP

The Tshwane giants had to do without their seven players who were representing Bafana Bafana against Ivory Coast on Tuesday.

These are namely; Ronwen Williams, Khuliso Mudau, Themba Zwane, Aubrey Modiba, Teboho Mokoena, Grant Kekana and Mothobi Mvala.

Coach Rulani Mokwena had to tinker with his starting lineup in the absence of many of his starters.

GOALS GALORE 90 MINUTES

The hosts went to the break leading with a two-goal cushion. Mahlangu opened the scoring as early as 12 minutes.

Four minutes later it was 2-0 as Mbunjana doubled the lead. In the second half, Masandawana got a lifeline as Marcelo Allende pulled one back in the 57th minute.

Sirino leveled matters deep in injury time to salvage a draw and head to extra time. The extra-time was less in action as both teams failed to find the back of the net and take the lead. TS Galaxy finally won 5-4 on penalties.
