Bonginkosi Makume on the verge of signing for PSL club

A PSL club is edging closer to completing the signing of the former Maritzburg United defender Bonginkosi Makume on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old has been a free agent since September when he was handed the clearance by the Team of Choice. Maritzburg were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season.

It is understood that Makume asked the club to release him from the contract he had with them. This is after they couldn’t meet his financial demands after the relegation.

FARPost has learnt that Makume has been holding talks with the Motsepe Foundation Championship newly-promoted side Upington City. It is understood he’s close to penning a deal.

The club’s Team Manager Ruben Cloete confirmed they were in the final stages of the negotiations with Makume’s representatives. And he stated the talks have been “positive”.

UPINGTON CITY CONFIRM BONGINKOSI MAKUME TALKS

“We’re definitely having talks and they are very positive,” Cloete told FARPost.

“But normally, I’m very cautious…once everything is finalised, we will be able to give the proper answer. The talks are going positively.

“We are confident that we having him over. But we need to sort out the final details which I don’t foresee any problems regarding that. Once we are able to get that point, we will be able to say the deal is done.”

The Northern Cape-based side secured promotion to the second-tier after they reached the final of the ABC Motsepe National Playoffs.

They went on to beat Orbit College 3-1 in the final to be crowned the champions of the Playoffs.

MAKUME PREVIOUSLY LINKED WITH CHIPPA, AMAZULU AND RICHARDS BAY

Makume was previously heavily linked with a move to Chippa United before he even left Maritzburg United. Further, the two KZN outfits Richards Bay FC and AmaZulu FC also reportedly joined the race for the talented defender’s signature.

However, it seems the former Baroka FC man won’t be making a return to the DStv Premiership this season.
