Calvin Marlin – Main reason for Cape Town Spurs’ early season struggles

Former Cape Town Spurs FC goalkeeper coach Calvin Marlin has revealed the main reason for the early season struggles faced by his former side.

Marlin, along with former club’s head coach Shaun Bartlett and assistant coach Nasief Morris helped Spurs to a second position in the Motsepe Foundation Championship League in the previous season.

They, therefore, qualified for the PSL Promotional Playoffs along with Casric Stars FC and Maritzburg United FC.

The luck was on their side as they acquired a promotion to the DStv premiership league via the PSL Promotional Playoffs.

However, they have found it difficult in the top-flight as Spurs lost their seven-season opening games under their guidance. Subsequently, the trio was then released from duties.

These results have left Spurs languishing at the bottom of the league standings with zero points.

Marlin has pointed at the lack of time to recover for the players and the short pre-season as the main challenges that led them to the struggles.

“Well, the biggest challenge for any club that gets promoted or been in the playoffs is that you don’t really have much time for the players to recover or prepare for a proper pre-season. You just kinda continue,” Marlin told FARPost in an exclusive interview.

“So the biggest challenge, I think you saw how the team played, in a way the team played is that they started off well, but they just can’t maintain until for the 90 minutes. So, that’s was our biggest challenge, to keep players fresh so they can compete,” Marlin added

Moreover, the Urban Warriors appointed Vasili Manousakis as the assistant coach to temporary head coach Sean Connor, who’s the club Technical Director.
